One Year Bible Blogging posts on Mark, 2011

February 15, 2011; Mark 1:1-28

Genesis 1:6; "And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." Mark 1:3-9a; "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way...the people of Jerusalem [way of peace] went out to him...Jesus of Nazareth [Salvation of (the separated or guardian of the dust)]

Scripture notes: Galatians 5:13; "You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature ; rather, serve one another in love." Jeremiah 34:17; "Therefore, this is what the LORD says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom for your fellow countrymen. So I now proclaim ‘freedom’ for you, declares the LORD—‘freedom’ to fall by the sword, plague and famine. I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth."

Personal notes: There is a lot of question about the geography of Nazareth in Jesus' day - but there is little doubt amongst the linguists of what the name means today. Two etymologies I came across were "separation" and "guardian" or "hill over Palestine."

February 16, 2011; Mark 1:29-2:12

Mark 2:10b; "know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins... 'I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.'" John 20:23a; "If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven" Mat.6:15; "But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."

February 17, 2011; Mark 2:13-3:6

Mark 3:4; "Then Jesus [YHWH's Salvation] asked them, 'Which is lawful on the Sabbath [Day of atonement]: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?' Isaiah 22:10-11; "You counted the buildings in Jerusalem and tore down houses to strengthen the wall...but you did not look to the One...who planned it long ago."

Personal Note: For those of you who do not know, the words in [brackets] represent the approximate meanings of words as used in original languages as portrayed by Bible dictionary or Lexicon linguists.

Scripture note: Perhaps its time for the USA and Israel to take a dose of their own medicines in treating their neighbor's as equals by and not labeling them as evil according to the Word, and the Will of God.

Ezekiel 42:20; "It had a wall around it, five h...undred cubits long and five hundred cubits wide, to separate the holy from the common."

Ezekiel 46:12; "When the prince provides a freewill offering to the LORD—whether a burnt offering or fellowship offerings—the gate facing east is to be opened for him. He shall offer his burnt offering or his fellowship offerings as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and after he has gone out, the gate will be shut.

Ezekiel 47:2; "He then brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was flowing from the south side."

Ephesians 2:4; "he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility"

Revelation 21:13-27a; "were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west...On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful

Mark 12:28-34a;

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.[e] 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[f] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[g] There is no commandment greater than these.”

32 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”

February 18, 2011; Mark 3:7-30

Joel 2:28; "I will pour out my Spirit on all people." Mark3:28-30; "I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin. Matthew 7:1; "Do not judge, or you too will be judged."

Personal Note: This teaching is profound - and worthy of tremendous concern! If we as a religious culture claim that the Spirit of God is not at work within our fellowman - proclaiming they are of the devil - we only serve to condemn our own culture by not seeing the very hand of God! If we claim another culture is going to hell - and choose through war to send them there, We completely ignore the power of YHWH's Salvation and commit the ultimate sin! I cannot interpret this teaching any other way! Help me out if you disagree!

February 19, 2011; Mark 3:31-4:25

Mark 3:24; "'Consider carefully what you hear,' (Jesus) continued. 'With the measure you use, it will be measured to you - and even more." vs.22b; "whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed." John 3:17; "God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world" through him"

February 20, 2011; Mark 4:26-5:20

Mark 4:28; "All by itself the soil produces grain - first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head" vs.38-40; "Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, 'Teacher, don't you care if we drown?' He got up, rebuked the wind...'Quiet! Be Still...Do you still have no faith?"

February 21, 2011; Mark 5:21-43

Mark 5:35b; "some men came from the house of Jairus [whom God enlightens] the synagogue ruler, 'You're daughter is dead' vs.36; "Ignoring what they said,[YHWH's Salvation]... went in where the child was...and said to her..."I say to you, get up!" vs.34b; "faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."

February 22, 2011; Mark 6:1-29

Mark 6:1-6; "Jesus [YHWH's Salvation]...went to his hometown...they asked. "What's this wisdom...that he even does miracles! Isn't this Mary's [bitter water's] son and the brother of James [substitute by superiority]... without honor. He could not do any miracles there... amazed at their lack of faith."

Personal Note: Perhaps a stretch between the passage and the video - however, I believe both represent the point: Ownership of "MY" Salvation destroys the power of His Saving grace! Please say a quick prayer for our world and - pass it on! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ko_VSKn1DAE (Seven Percent Only on Youtube)

February 23, 2011; Mark 6:30-56

Exodus 18:25; "He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens." Mark 6:40b-42; "they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties...He (Jesus) gave thanks and broke the loaves...gave them to his disciples to set before the people"

Personal Note: No one wants Israel to disappear, we just want to end apartheid and oppression. We need Israel's leadership - The King of the Jews has inherited the dust of the earth!

February 24, 2011; Mark 7:1-23

Leviticus 15:11a "Anyone the man with a discharge touches without rinsing his hands with water must wash his clothes and bathe with water" Mark 7:13b-23; "you nullify the word of God by your tradition...For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts...theft, murder,...greed, malice, deceit...slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.'"

Personal Note: (Col. West has become prominent politically as he condemns Muslims) Col. West; Psalm 149:6-7 states "May the praise of God be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands, to inflict vengeance on the nations" Although that speaks of the Word of God, your country has used that verse just like Israel - and you have condemned Islam and continue to do so as though your ideologies were any different!

Personal Note: Due to Col. West's challenge and others, I am in the process of reading the Qur'an. I seriously doubt Col. West has ever read the book. Although Muhammad also spoke of "self defense" as He and his people were attacked, He speaks often of Peace, Grace, and Mercy. He states his followers must not attack those who do not attack them.

In "The Bee vs.37-38", the Qur'an reads: "God does not guide those who misguide [others], nor will they have anyone to help them. They have sworn by God with their strongest oaths that He will not raise the dead to life. But He will - it is His binding promise, though most people do not realize it." (Translation by M.A.S. Abdel Haleem, published by Oxford University Press).

For me, this brings to mind Isaiah 45:23-24a (NIV1984): In that passage, Isaiah claims God revealed these words to Him: "By myself I have sworn, my mouth has uttered in all integrity a word that will not be revoked: Before me every knee will bow; by me every tongue will swear. 24 They will say of me, ‘In the LORD alone are righteousness and strength.’” This closes a revelation of three chapters revealing all Man's madness in creating images and likeness of who He is to no avail.

Many Christians leaders and lay people would like to argue that when this day comes (when every knee bows and every tongue confesses), it will be too late! However, to date, no one can show me any scripture which backs up that claim. Therefore, it is my understanding that Muhammad was right! God our Father has saved the worst of sinners through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ and His resurrection from the Dead - firstborn of a new creation! In that moment, He has raised the dead to life! I doubt any of us will understand fully His strength and His righteousness before that final hour! We all remain on equal footing in our humanity, drudging up the dust of the earth in our theological prowess! Until that day then, the best we can do is to Love our fellowman and follow our Father's example given us through Christ by praying for those that persecute us; "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do".

Personal Note: Too political? My apologies, the attitudes propelling this man into power concern me greatly! His comments on the world stage have been extremely damaging to over a billion of God's children - and are of the nature that lead countries into civil war - destroying even the American ideals of One Nation under God.

February 25, 2011; Mark 7:24-8:10

Mark 7:33-35; "Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spit and touched the man's tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, 'Ephphatha!' (which means, 'Be opened!'). At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly."

Personal Note; (following Wikipedia link to Fatah) the "Palestinian National Liberation Movement". From this was crafted the reverse acronym Fatḥ (or Fatah), meaning "opening", "conquering", or "victory"" Mark 7:28b; "Yes, Lord," she replied, "but even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." Luke 8:48; "“Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

Interestingly, Ephphatha and Fatah have the same meaning - perhaps no other correlation to this scripture, or perhaps...; This story is followed by 7 loaves and seven baskets perhaps referring back to Beersheba (well of the 7 fold oath), then Jesus went to the region of Dalmanutha [the cold fountain] where the Pharisees asked for a sign.

Reading the meanings of fatah and Ephphatha, it is tough not to recognize the roots to the word "Faith." That brings up two verses:

I Corinthians 13:2b; "if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing."

Matthew 13:15; "For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’"

I do not fully understand the "Fatah" group, but I know enough to be concerned that America, Israel, and Islam cherish this violent group.

February 26, 2011; Mark 8:11-38;

Mark 8:11-34; "The Pharisees came...to test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. He sighed deeply...the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law...If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow"

Personal Notes: This seems easy - but when you have to go against the house of your religion proclaiming His Peace for the world, it can be a very lonely road. Mark 8:15 states: "Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees. He then gave them a lesson that I believe must be based on the Hebrew numerical alphabet in Mark 8:19-21. This is the best I can do to decipher the message today:

5 (He) often feminine (almost silent) meaning the or that;

12: Yod Beit; "Beit is close to "Beth meaning "house". The Yod can mean "my" or "His". We must remember the house of God is God's House! When facing the Holy of Holies, there was a table with 12 loaves of bread to the right. Those 12 loaves symbolically represented the 12 tribes of Israel - symbolically representing the divisions of man.

The meaning then of the feeding of the 5 loaves to the 5000 with 12 basketfuls may be the same message as the cleansing of the temple! "the house is My House, meant to be for all people".

7 (Sheva) close resemblance to Sheba which again refers to the sevenfold oath - including all the significants and the insignificants of the Bible - those with Holy Power - and those without! Righteous and wicked, believers and unbelievers. Blessed and those to be blessed by!

4 (door or fish) Behold, I stand at the door and knock; I will make you fishers of men. Interestingly, Mark 8:22 begins "They came to Bethsaida [House of Fish] (notice the similarity of saida with Sidon [Hunter's lodge]). Unfortunately, a hunter or a fisher hunts, kills, or destroys; Thus, too often, after conversion - we are filled with theology regarding hell and end up serving the power of "hellish" theologies rather than "Salvation" theologies. In sharing the Love of God, I do not feel it is important to even consider the power of hell - it has been destroyed in Jesus Name - and we ourselves must recognize that power of salvation as we share His Good News!

The Good Shepherd calls, and the sheep hear His voice; Open Babylon [gate of deity]. We often must leave our house, go out into His World and share the Good News of what Our Father did for all of His Children! We must beware of the "yeast" (partiality) of the Pharisee, open the door and serve the weak, the oppressed, the widows and orphans within God's Kingdom - Those lost souls seeking the Love of God.

February 27, 2011; Mark 9:1-29

Mark 9:1b-10; "I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power... His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them... coming down the mountain... They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what {it (rising from the dead)} meant"

February 28, 2011; Mark 9:30-10:12

Mark 9:50; "Everyone will be salted with fire... Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other" Isaiah 66:23b-24; "all mankind will come and bow down before me...they will go out and look upon the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me; their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched"

Scripture Note: Amos 6:12b; "you have turned justice into poison (fear of the fire) and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness (wormwood)." Proverbs 9:10; "The fear of the LORD (Hell/fire) is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One (Love/ Justice/ Salvation/ His Righteousness) is understanding"

Personal Note: If we read the Bible in light of spirituality, it may well be that we look on ancient theologies which have become abhorrent to humanity. His Spirit continues to guide us into the truth of His Salvation.

March 1, 2011; Mark 10:13-31

Mark 10:18b-31; "'No one is good-except God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony'... 'With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God... But many who are first will be last, and the last first."

March 2, 2011; Mark 10:32-52

Mark 10:46-52a; "Then they came to Jericho [fragrance, rose garden, city of palms]. As Jesus [YHWH's Salvation]... together with a large crowd was leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (that is, the Son of Timaeus [highly prized]... began to shout... have mercy on me... said Jesus, 'your faith has healed you'"

Personal Notes; Socrates and Timaeus Philosophy "Atlantis": Timaeus; "...in speaking of the copy and the original we may assume that words are akin to the matter which they describe; when they relate to the lasting and permanent and intelligible, they ought to be lasting and unalterable, and, as far as their nature allows, irrefutable and immovable-nothing less. But when they express only the copy or likeness and not the eternal things themselves, they need only be likely and analogous to the real words. As being is to becoming, so is truth to belief."

Timaeus; "...God desired that all things should be good and nothing bad, so far as this was attainable. Wherefore also finding the whole visible sphere not at rest, but moving in an irregular and disorderly fashion, out of disorder he brought order, considering that this was in every way better than the other."

Timaeus; "Once more, then, at the commencement of my discourse, I call upon God, and beg him to be our savior out of a strange and unwonted enquiry, and to bring us to the haven of probability. So now let us begin again." Bartimaeus; ("Rabbi, I want to see." Mark 10:51b)

March 3, 2011; Mark 11:1-25

Genesis 49:11a;"He will tether his donkey to a vine, his colt to the choicest branch" Mark 11:4-9a;"They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway...brought the colt to Jesus...people spread their cloaks... others spread branches...Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted Hosanna!"

March 4, 2011; Mark 11:27-12:17

Mark 12:2-17; "At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard... They came to him and said, 'Teacher... should we pay or shouldn't we?... Jesus said to them, 'Give to... God what is God's" Genesis 1:27b; "God created man in his own image, in the image of God"

Personal Note: I find it amazing that when you consider a chapter long enough, all the stories have to do with the same thing. The question about taxes was who's image was on the coin - the question about the vineyard also was about who carried God's image - all of us. Our Father...

March 5, 2011; Mark 12:18-37

Mark 12:24-33a; "[YHWH's Salvation] replied, 'Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?... God is one and there is no other but him... To love him with all your heart...all your understanding... and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings"

March 6, 2011; Mark 12:38-13:13

Mark 13:1b; "What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!" Isaiah 41:15; "I will make you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth. You will thresh the mountains and crush them, and reduce the hills to chaff." Daniel 12:7b; "power of... holy people... finally broken" I John 3:14b; "Love remains"

March 7, 2011; Mark 13:14-37

Mark 13:30-31; "I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away... my words will never pass away" Colossians 1:24b-27; "I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions... for the sake of his body... to present to you the word of God in its fullness... Christ in you, the hope of glory."

Personal Note with video: Close your eyes and recoup from the video above and allow this to bring you back to face this new day. (Appropriate worship shall heal our sorrow - but let us not forget that sorrow, nor our sin.) Eva Cassidy "How Can I Keep From Singing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRMLvgjPd60

March 8, 2011; Mark 14:1-21

Proverbs 25:18; "Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow is the man who gives false testimony against his neighbor." Mark 14:21a; "The Son of Man will go just as it was written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man!" James 4:11b-12; "do not slander one another-who are you to judge"

Personal Note: A surprise to many Christians is that Muslims also preach from the Bible: Jesus was not a Christian or a Muslim - but both religions preach the teachings of Jesus Christ! We cannot lay claims to the "Right" Christ as long as we imagine a God that plays favorites - except when it comes to choosing between (His) judging between the oppressors and the oppressed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqPdNsjQxGQ

March 9, 2011; Mark 14:22-52

Mark 14:48-50; "'Am I leading a rebellion,' said Jesus [salvation], 'that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?'" Zechariah 13:8-9a; "'In the whole land,' declares the LORD... one-third will be left... This third I will bring into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name"

Scripture notes: Mark 14:24a; "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many"

Psalm 75:8; "In the hand of the LORD is a cup full of foaming wine mixed with spices; he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth drink it down to its very dregs."

Proverbs 31:8; " “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute."

Psalms 79:11; "May the groans of the prisoners come before you; by the strength of your arm preserve those condemned to die."

Hebrews 9:27; "Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,"

Job 14:14; "If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait for my renewal to come."

March 10, 2011; Mark 14:53-72

Numbers 12:14; "The LORD replied to Moses, "If her father had spit in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days?" Mark 14:64b-65a; "They all condemned him as worthy of death. Then some began to spit at him; Isaiah 53:4b; "we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted."

March 11, 2011; Mark 15:1-47

John 18:31; "judge him by your own law." "But we have no right to execute anyone," they objected. Mark 15:3-31a; "The chief priests accused him... the chief priests stirred up the crowd... "Crucify him" they shouted... "Crucify him!"... the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves"

Personal and Scriptural notes: It is commonly believed today that the holocaust took place as one religious body judged another - to judge another, or to deny such an event took place causes catastrophe. Unfortunately, today, the Christian Church is absolving Judaism of ...their character at the crucifixion and the Muslim culture is denying Jesus ever died! All these political and theological ploys carry tremendous weight in light of the fulfillment of Old Testament scripture. Salvation shall come when Christians forgive the shortcomings of others and stop killing their fellowman in the name of their faith. Salvation shall come for the Jews when they look upon the one they have pierced. Salvation shall come for the Muslims when they realize that everything had to take place that day exactly as it did to fulfill the very plan of the creator revealed through Isaiah the prophet in Isaiah 53.

Who has believed our message

and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,

and like a root out of dry ground.

He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,

nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,

a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.

Like one from whom people hide their faces

he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

4 Surely he took up our pain

and bore our suffering,

yet we considered him punished by God,

stricken by him, and afflicted.

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,

he was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was on him,

and by his wounds we are healed.

6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,

each of us has turned to our own way;

and the LORD has laid on him

the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed and afflicted,

yet he did not open his mouth;

he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,

and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,

so he did not open his mouth.

8 By oppression[a] and judgment he was taken away.

Yet who of his generation protested?

For he was cut off from the land of the living;

for the transgression of my people he was punished.[b]

9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,

and with the rich in his death,

though he had done no violence,

nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer,

and though the LORD makes[c] his life an offering for sin,

he will see his offspring and prolong his days,

and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.

11 After he has suffered,

he will see the light of life[d] and be satisfied[e];

by his knowledge[f] my righteous servant will justify many,

and he will bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[g]

and he will divide the spoils with the strong,[h]

because he poured out his life unto death,

and was numbered with the transgressors.

For he bore the sin of many,

and made intercession for the transgressors.

Scriptural notes: Zechariah 12:9-10; "On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem. (the way of peace)

"And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son."

(kind of sounds like the blood of the lamb brought Israel back into the fold, following the night they were passed over).

March 12, 2011; Mark 16:1-20

Mark 16:2b-7; "just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, 'Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?'... 'You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene who was crucified. He has risen... and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him."

Personal Notes: Are we lying to the world by telling them the price of Salvation was paid for them through an Almighty Love or not? Too many "believers and non-believers" have given up and decided they are not loved by our God based directly on our theological partialities! Do we, then, dare to be intolerant of His inspiration of Love within our fellowman?

Personal thought: ‎"You're going to Hell" is absolutely a statement of judgment! It is false testimony about our Creator and Savior! It has no bearing on the gospel of Good News which has come to all people. It is the very sting of death erased by our Messiah as He was nailed to the cross for us.

March 12, 2010; Numbers 16:41-18:32, Mark 16:1-20, Psalm 55:1-23, Proverbs 11:7

Heavenly Father, as we intentionally seek your Love through your word as revealed through your only begotten Son, we pray that you would bless us with the gifts promised through your Holy Spirit.  Help us to understand your Love through your past actions, through our present lives, and in our hope for the life to come.  As we study your history in our world, may our thoughts and words be acceptable in your sight and be of benefit to one another.  Lord, we desire to seek unity in you.  Bless our time together we pray.

Response to Numbers 16:41-18:32

Numbers 16:41-Numbers 17.

After two years in the wilderness of Sinai, the people had been told to move in Numbers 10.  As uncomfortable as that was, grumbling and complaining had become an habitual addiction to the point of mutiny by Numbers 16. No longer were the people honoring their great God of power and strength.  Although He is slow to anger, our Loving Father had to discipline and earned the reputation as a God of wrath. In today's reading, a plague killed 14,700 people before Aaron's leadership was vindicated through his presence among the people which brought the plague to an end.  God then has Moses collect rods from each tribe with Aaron's representing the tribe of the Levites. God makes it clear that Aaron is the leader with the budding rod which is then placed in the ark of the covenant with the 2 stone tablets and the manna.

As a child, I did not understand my Father when he disciplined me.  Sometimes it felt cruel.  Today, I know that His love was always there and I am a better man because of his willingness to discipline.  Numbers 14:18 echoed Exodus 34:6-7 and reminded us; 'The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children..." We certainly see that playing out in the readings of the past few chapters.

We can accept the punishment of death as God calmed the rebellion of his children through discipline when we understand that death on earth has no victory when it comes to eternal life.  I trust those who died in the wilderness are together with Him in paradise praising God as they have seen the story through to fruition and understand the end game.  On earth, those Israelites witnessed God's power and leadership through Aaron through the miracle of the flowering rod.  Following the discipline, there was beauty and providence.  This sign and seal of God's sovereignty and providence was now witnessed by three gifts within the cradle of the ark which rested under the mercy seat.  The gift of the law to provide peace and honor among men and with the Father.  The manna - blessing from above when we experience the wilderness of little hope.  Aaron's rod, prodding us to follow Him and honor the leaders He has placed within our midst.

verses in hope of the weakness of death;

Ezekiel 37:12-14 "Therefore prophesy and say to them: 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: O my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.  Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them.  I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.'"

II Corinthians 5:1-5; "Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."

Numbers 18

Now that the rebellion of the people had been disciplined, Moses was able to focus again on the establishment of the ministers of the religion of the people.  Although the people had originally had access to the tabernacle, God now gave that priviledge to the Levitical tribe and it was up to them to adminster religious right to the remainder of the tribes within the camp.  As they were not allotted lands and possessions as the other tribes, but were given this special access to God, they were given the tithe from the other 10 tribes.  The 12 tribes (Joseph's tribe split into Ephraim and Mannasseh) were to tithe 10% which would be given to the Priests and Levites.  In that culture, this became the tax as their form of government was a theocracy with God as the supreme head and the Levites became the servants of the King.

In this culture, God was supreme.  The Israelite nation had become His chosen representatives on earth.  Through them, He showed forth His power and authority among men.  He was Father, God, and ultimate authority.  We the people stand guilty before God, just as those people did that day.  Although He forgives, He disciplines us toward honor as He understands our burden and the need for honor in all of our relationships as the rewards of such honor are faith, hope, and love.

We the people are guilty! We have rebelled against God.  In today's reading, God required the Levites to be representatives of the guilty, bearing the iniquity of the people as servants in His house. This office of Priest or Minister was not set up so much as a position of authority, as it was to be a representative servant before God of the people serving in the house of the Lord.  The people were obligated to support these representatives as they had no other inheritance. Their inheritance of God's representatives is the pain and the iniquity of the people.  They received the sacrificial offerings - both by requirement and by freewill - from the people they represented.  The remainder of the people were to work the land and care for the earth.  All were to honor God.

Although Numbers 18 speaks to Aaron and his family as well as the tribe of Levi, it is written for all of us too.  The people of God who attend His house of worship, represent the iniquity of the people.  We stand in worship as representatives before God of all men.  We are required to support those whom He has placed in leadership among us.  Our tithes and offerings should be given in thanksgiving and honor to God in rememberance of His love for us.  Our time, our talent and our treasure was received from Him and He prods us to honor Him with these gifts as such honor will enhance our lives with faith, hope, and love.  They do not earn our salvation as that has already been taken care of by Jesus Christ.  However, if we do not believe, by all means, give sacrificially as He understands the heart and will reward those who seek Him.  Just think on these things as you give and understand the love of the Father that calls you and has provided for your salvation.

Scripture references regarding representation before God;

Isaiah 53:10b "it was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes (though you make) his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.

Matthew 20:25-28 "Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

I Timothy 6:1-5; "All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God's name and our teaching may not be slandered. Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead, they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers, and dear to them. These are the things you are to teach and urge on them. If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

Scripture regarding tithing:

Deuteronomy 15:5-6, 15:11 "if only you fully obey the Lord your God and are careful to follow all these commands I am giving you today. For the Lord your God will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. You will rule over many nations but none will rule over you. "There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land."

II Corinthians 9:6-10; "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: "He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever."(Psalm 112:9) Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.

I Timothy 6:6-10a; "But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil."

I Timothy 6:17-19; "Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

Response to Mark 16:1-20

Focus on Mark 16:1-8

I Corinthians 15:55-57; "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hosea 6:2-3; "After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence. Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth."

The events of this morning following the Sabbath, the first day of the week is told by all four gospel writers. (Matthew 28:1-10, Luke 23:55-24:11, and John 20:1-18).  Each account tells of Mary Magdalene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Magdalene).  Each gospel writer mentions other women at the scene of the crucifiction.  Luke shares that all of these women went to the tomb early Sunday morning, the first day of the week.  (http://www.aboutbibleprophecy.com/p44.htm).  In checking different translations of Mark's account, the adjectives for the womens moods include 'alarmed', amazed, bewildered, trembling, astonishment, afraid, afrighted.  Confusion may have been a good word also.  They had gone expecting to honor the body - apparently not realizing the tomb was being gaurded and had been sealed.  The angel tells them to go and tell the disciples that He is going to Galilee just as he said (Mark 14:28, Matthew 26:32).  Although he met with them in Jerusalem, He also met them after they returned home to the region of Galilee (See John 21 'sea of Tiberias aka; sea of Galilee) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_of_Galilee.

Focus on Mark 16:9-20

note in the Tyndale house Publishers "The One Year Bible" 'The earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not have Mark 16:9-20.

Verse 9 refers to the story shared in John 20:11-18 which introduces us to Mary Magdalene (see also the website above).  The disciples were obviously still in mourning as Jesus had only been dead a little over 36 hours.  This passage mentions the two men from Emmaus who are recorded in Luke 24:13-35.  The great commission is given in verse 15-16.  I was unable to find a comparable verse in the other gospels regarding this account which reflect the phrase "he who does not believe will be condemned."  Regardless of whether or not this is an original text, it does not state that such an individual is going to hell.  Absolutely, they stand in condemnation until they believe!  The great commission as given in Matthew, Luke, and Acts, only commissions the disciples to go into all the world and preach repentance and forgiveness to all nations, peoples, and all of creation and to baptise all who believe.  Nothing is ever stated about telling anybody they are going to hell.  No other writing ever says anything about playing with deadly snakes or drinking poison either.  These acts would not be advisable just because we find them in the Bible.

Therefore, as we go out into all the world, it is good if we know the gospel we are to preach.  I feel the church is in error by preaching eternal damnation for those who do not believe.  I do believe it is good to preach repentance as I feel that each child of God (you and me) has a yearning to become one again with the Father.  Just as an angry child, hurt and lost, many stand in rebellion because they have not understood the Love of the Father.  However, the Spirit is at work and it is imperative that we do not work against the work of the Spirit.  This message is one of Love, Joy, and Peace.  We shall be moving next into the gospel of Luke, so I will share two verses from there that shed light on what I am trying to say;

Luke 1:50 "His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation."

Luke 2:10-14 "But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ (Hebrew 'Messiah' both mean "the Anointed One) the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
     Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." (John 3:17 "He is not willing that any should perish!)

Luke 3:6-9; "And all mankind will see God's salvation." (Isaiah 40:3-5) John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."

personal note: If you feel the axe is at the root of your ministry, get back on track regarding God's plan of salvation and Love and get off election and wrath - they only cause envy and strife among your fellow man.

Luke 4:18-19; "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." (Isaiah 61:1,2)

Luke 6:27-36; "But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
     If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Luke 12:5-7; "But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." (He has the power, but that's not the plan; honor - don't be afraid)

Luke 12:10; "And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven." (If the Spirit of God desires all men and claims to be at work in all men, who are we to condemn any man? - love the sinner, hate the sin - by calling any man the anti-christ, you may be countering Christ.)

Luke 17:20b-21; "The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within (among) you."

Luke 24:45b-47; "he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, 'This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.'

Response to Psalm 55:1-23

Distress in time of treachery: Psalm 55:1-15

This Psalm is attributed to David.  He is overwhelmed with dread and feels the eyes of his enemy upon him.  It would almost appear in this first section that he were the young David residing within the house of Saul who wished to kill him and had even attempted to pin him to the wall with his spear on several occasions. (I Samuel 18-19).  However, seeing that a close friend has betrayed him, it appears more likely this represents II Samuel 15-16 when Absolom, his son, seeks the help of David's friend and counselor Ahithophel.  Fear was not a stranger to David, who was well known for his battle prowess, bravery, and faith.

This Psalm could easily be applied to Jesus emotions as He faced the evils in this world, including the betrayal of Judas.  It certainly reflects all of our emotions as we face the storms of life, especially when friends let us down.

Regardless of how alone David felt, he always knew God was with him.  He imagined that God was always on his side, which certainly was true.  However, his imaginations were that God was against those who were against him - even Ahithophel who was his confidant and counselor.  However, his prayer of righteousness placed his heart at ease and voiced his petition before God.

That same attitude can be held by us.  Verse 22; "Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you;"

When praying regarding our physical enemies, we can pray for deliverance, but we must also pray for peace, for understanding, and for forgiveness. A favorite Psalm of mine is Psalm 139 as David inadvertently exposes his heart before our merciful Heavenly Father.  Given the rest of the biblical message, I have no doubt prayers of hatred for our fellowman do not follow after the heart of God Listen:

Psalm 139:19-24; "If only you would slay the wicked, O God! Away from me, you bloodthirsty men! They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name. Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord,
and abhor those who rise up against you? I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies.  Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me,  (uh, yeah!) and lead me in the way everlasting.

I cannot ask God to search me and know my heart because I know there is an offensive way in me!  I am certain there was in David also and I know there is in you!  These offensive ways within us are the real enemies! These ideologies and demons within are what I imagine when I read this Psalm.  How can I hate you when I too am but a fallen human being trying to make it on earth.  There are oppressive and brutal evil men on earth and they too suffer demons and offensive ways.  But there is a way into any heart.  The Bible says so.

O Lord, heal each of us from our offensive ways.  cast them down into the lowest pit; those thoughts of hate, bloodthirst, and treachery.  They affect me and my brothers here on earth. Let thy Kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven.  Let us seek your peace and let us find it!  In thee do we trust.

Response to Proverbs 11:7

I feel quite certain this verse speaks of the wicked man's earthly ambitions.  Seeking power on earth is a vain attempt.  Whatever we gain will be lost in death.  We can provide earthly goods for our children, but with them come much evil and separation from what is really important.  Seek Him who has the power after death!  For that is all that matters.  I cannot tell you what awaits you on the other side if you die a wicked man.  Choose life, freedom, and the pursuit of the Father of Love, Joy, and Peace now!

Until tomorrow

March 11, 2010, Numbers 15:17-16:40, Mark 15:1-47, Psalm 54:1-7, Proverbs 11:5-6

Holy Father; You have provided the Lamb laying your claim in Love on all of your creation.  Help us to see the power of that Gift today and honor you with our thoughts and words of thanksgiving and praise.  May the lights of our lives bring glory to you.

Response to Numbers 15:17-16:40

The Passover marked the Exodus from Egypt.  Eventually, it would mark the first celebration of the Israelites as they crossed the Jordan River.  Joshua 5:10-12 marks that event-filled day.  "On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate of the produce of Canaan."

That day marked a day of celebration!  The beginning of the next chapter of their journey.  In looking forward to this day, Moses - perhaps with the knowledge from the 12 spies, set apart this special offering of course grain as a memorial of their coming accomplishment (Numbers 15:17-21)

His call to the people to not forget the ritual honor to God will be a constant theme as we continue on through the book of Numbers and especially Deuteronomy.  There would be continued blessing if the people would seek after God through their worship and ceremony, but if they would forsake this law, their unique blessing and protection would be removed.  This strict adherance would have to be a community wide event.  There was a peer pressure to follow after the Lord their God so that they would remain a Holy people, bringing honor to a Holy God before all peoples.  The law would be the same for God's chosen people and the sojourners who resided in their midst.  Today, God's people are represented by different ethnic and religious cultures worldwide.  You don't have to go far to find religion, and you can never escape the Kingdom of God.  This call to virtue, honor, and celebration is to every man.  Some just need an invitation to participate as they do not feel worthy.  Check it out! The desire for Love and acceptance is common to mankind.

Even the best among us make mistakes.  Let me pick on King David.  Revered by many worldwide as a man after God's own heart from of old; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people." (I Samuel 13:14).  However, this same David, King David, violated Numbers 15:30.  Through his power, David had Uriah the Hittite die by the sword so that He could take Uriah's wife as his own.  His sin was pre-meditated and high handed.  Numbers 15:30 stated; "'But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native-born or alien, blasphemes the Lord, and that person must be cut off from his people."  So, you may ask, what was David's punishment?  Our answer comes from the prophet Nathan who was presented before David in II Samuel 12:9-11a to pronounce the Lord's judgement.

"Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.  Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own."
      "This is what the LORD says: 'Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity upon you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you,"  One might wonder if this was enough compared to our reading in Numbers - "you shall be cut off from your people."

If this punishment was not enough, perhaps David received a painful redemption through the loss of his firstborn son by Bathsheba, Uriah's wife.  As Solomon, their next son eventually became King over all Israel, this son, Solomon's older brother, quite probably would have been King had he lived.  And yet, seven days after his birth, this firstborn son of David and Bathsheba was taken from them in death - perhaps with redemptive qualities - allowing David to remain in power and protect the Kingdom.  Guilt and separation through a high - handed sin, substitutionary atonement through a firstborn son, and yet a life requiring honor and repentance including a patient acceptance of the real consequences of one's sin through the remainder of his life on this earth.

As we know from our reading of Exodus, Leviticus, and now Numbers, God required these people to be holy because He is holy.  They could not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but were required to be transformed by the renewal of their minds so that they could exemplify the will of God, what was good, and acceptable and perfect.  Anything less was not acceptable.  Thus, a man collecting sticks on the Sabbath was stoned by the entire congregation.  They must remove the yeast - all infection - from their presence.  They were treading on Holy ground.  Not only would they enter the promised land through the mighty strength of the Lord, but they would concieve and bear a Son whose name would be called Emmanuel - which is, "God with us".

Numbers 15:37-41 speaks of the tassels.  While they roamed the desert, they learned the law of the Lord.  They wore remembrance on their clothing.  Their young men took the vow of a Nazirite and devoted themselves to the Lord.  They memorized scripture and took God - their God - seriously!  Moses would add to this lifestyle in Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.  They were being disciplined in righteousness and strength in preparation of the coming day of the Lord as they would enter the promised land.  What remembrance do you surround yourself with to give the glory and honor to God for His blessings in your life?

On March 2, as we studied Psalm 45:1-17, we first looked at the "Sons of Korah.  Today, we were able to read this story of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.  What child does not rebel against discipline?  Numbers 15 was all about discipline in the Lord, and now Numbers 16 will speak of rebellion.  I cannot help but think of the rebellion of our cultures against our leaders as we read this passage.  I trust we can take some lessons from this reading on the importance of trusting that God is in control and has chosen our leaders for a reason.  I am reminded of Jesus stern warnings against blaspheming the Holy Spirit when the religious leaders of his day questioned whether the Spirit He received power from was actually the devil.  He said this blaspheme was an unpardonable sin.  We must be extremely cautious not to slander our leaders - not only for our own spiritual health, but for the reputation we place on the church and our God.  Hate talk and dissension must not be found within the children of God.  If you don't like it, get involved and attempt to change it. If you can't, accept it.  Now, let's look at Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

Of the four mentioned in Numbers 16:1, only Korah is of the tribe of Levi.  The other three are from the tribe of Reuben.  I can imagine, having the pride of the oldest brother's tribe, there must have been some jealousy! If you are like me, On has been the forgotten man in this story.  These men appeared justified in their accusations as well respected people and strengthened in numbers (250 leaders).  Kohath was the second son of Levi and Izhar was the second son of Kohath (see Exodus 6:21 and Numbers 3:19).  Korah is put forward as the leader of this rebellion - well chosen by a seemingly righteous group of God's chosen people.
Moses initially calls Korah and his representatives from the Levite clan.  He challenges them for seeking the priesthood, reminding us and them that the Levites have been called by God as servicer bearers for the Tabernacle, and not as Priests.  He reminds them that the call to the Priesthood (whatever office) is a call by God himself, so that their rebellion has nothing to do with Aaron, but with God himself. Here are some passages regarding the honor required by a child of God:

Ecclesiastes 8:2; "Obey the king's command, I say, because you took an oath before God."

Daniel 2:20b-21; "Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

John 19:2; "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above" do we, as children of God, have faith that He is still in control and has placed our leaders? Or are they so powerful as to have thwarted the will of God Himself?

Romans 13:1-7; "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor."

Titus 3:1-2; "Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men."

look up I Peter 2 in the Bible Gateway tool to the right - it is great reading for the child of God. I will quote only verses 13-17 as it pertains to this subject; "Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king."

So, it would appear He places our leaders in our midst to perform His will.  We must be involved in the political process as servants to God and our fellowman, but once the vote is counted, we must accept our Lord's design and have the faith to know He is not far from us.  We must honor our leaders in our honor before God.  If they ask us to go against our faith to the point of death, we must be willing to die at their hand.  If we are sent to prison because of our worship, we must worship in prison.  We do not need to be showy, but we must walk with integrity and honor.  Now, back to our story to show what may happen to righteous men who fail to follow this principle...

Having scolded Korah - an administer of God's house among the people, Moses now called Dathan and Abriram from the tribe of Reuben before him (Numbers 12-14).  However, they mocked Moses leadership and authority and refused to present themselves before their leader or their God for that matter! It would appear they are afraid that Moses will injur them (Will you put out the eyes of these men? (vs. 14)), but Moses confessed before God and the people; "I have not harmed one of them." (vs. 15).  He then turns back to Korah who had presented their case before Moses and calls them to put the Lord to the test the next morning to choose between them.

The next day, these 250 men presented themselves before the Lord.  Korah, in a position of leadership of the rebellion, called all the people to the assembly in what they felt was a righteous challenge to the authority and leadership of this prophet and priest whom God Almighty had placed in authority to lead them out of the land of Egypt.  Their anger and frustration, having been cut off from the blessings of God due to their continual complaining and slander, had finally reached an impass.  This was nothing less than mutiny.  By filling their censers, each was presenting their case before God - and Moses humbled himself before the will of the Lord.

Moses was indeed a prophet of God.  He instilled a fear in the Lord that has not been witnessed since his day, yet still affects the world's understanding of Him in our time.  The leaders of the rebellion, Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, and the 250 leaders of the rebellion with much of their families were swallowed up by the earth or burned.  The people witnessed God's wrath and committed their way to the Lord.

However, a greater prophet than Moses has ministered before God Almighty to men on earth.  The focus of his ministry took place within this same people group, but was given for the whole world.  Moses lived and died as a man.  He led the children of God through this time of rebellion to the very gates of the promised land.  This second prophet, Jesus Christ, fulfilled the multitude of prophecies and case studies given through this people of Israel in their writings captured in our Old Testament today.  He provided sacrifical atonement through His death on the cross.  He died that we might have life!  God Himself looked down and destroyed the people of rebellion before the prophet Moses, but He healed their wounds and diseases and promised a Kingdom of Peace for all men through the life and sacrifice of this man, Jesus Christ.  He looked upon Him before the assembly and said, "This is my Son in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!

Hebrews 3:1-14 says it this way; "Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God's house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, testifying to what would be said in the future. But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.
     So, as the Holy Spirit says: 'Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did. That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.' So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.' (Psalm 95:7-11)
     See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.  But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first."

Do not get caught up in the things of this earth.  Trust in the Love of God.  Understand it through the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.  He indeed is the way, the truth, and the life - our only safe passage back to the Father.

There is a final message in this story from Numbers 16:36-40 that is often missed.  After the destruction of these men, Moses declared them Holy.  They had acted according to what they felt was right.  Their memory was remembered before the Lord as the very bronze of the censers they had presented in worship became a memorial covering for the altar.  The sacrifices of the people of Israel would from that day forward be offered not only in memory of of the sins of the present day, but in memory of the sins of their fathers at a time of great rebellion as they had struggled with God in the wilderness.

God understands our pain and accepts our weakness.  Not even death - not even His wrath and discipline shall separate us from His love.  It is through the pain and stories of our lives that He chooses to build His Kingdom of Peace bringing together all of His children from the four corners of the earth and encompassing all of it's rich history.  What story do you have to add to the pain of our understanding?  Jesus' story too, involved pain.

Response to Mark 15:1-47

Today's reading of Jesus presentation before Pilate in the praetorium through His death and burial is also shared in the other three accounts of His life as recorded in our present day Bible.  (see Matthew 27:11-61, Luke 23:3-56, and John 18:29-19:42).  Luke adds a visit with Herod, governor of Galilee, where most of Jesus ministry had taken place.  Much of the story took place outside of the building as the people could not go into a Gentile building as they were in the midst of a passover celebration.  This was a high Holy Day, and in honor to the religious leaders, the people joined in the accusation against this man who had turned out to be a rebel against the Jewish faith and had no intention of granting them freedom from Roman oppression.

A great crowd had gathered in religious celebration and this showcase of a crucifiction became a focal point of their festivities.  Perhaps many did not even realize who it was standing condemned before them as the slaughter had already begun with floggings and beatings.  This man would not even speak up in his own defense and few of his followers were even aware of what had happened the night before.  Most of them were back home with families in Galilee celebrating the Passover and the 7 day feast of unleavened bread.

By reading the 4 accounts of this story, we can understand a bit more of the conversation between Pilate, Jesus, and the religious leaders present that day outside the praetorium;

"Then the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness the Jews did not enter the palace; they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What charges are you bringing against this man?" (John 18:28-29) "And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Christ, (or Messiah) a king." (Luke 23:2-3). "If he were not a criminal,...we would not have handed him over to you." (John 18:30).
     Pilate said, 'Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.' (stoning Lev.24:16) "But we have no right to execute anyone," the Jews objected. (John 12:31-32) All of this was according to the will of God so that prophecy might be fulfilled! (Deuteronomy 21:22-23, Isaiah 52:13-14, Isaiah 53, Matthew 20:18-19, John 12:32,)
     Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"

"Is that your own idea," Jesus asked, "or did others talk to you about me?"
     "Am I a Jew?" Pilate replied. "It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?"
     Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place."
     "You are a king, then!" said Pilate.
     Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."
     "What is truth?" Pilate asked.  (John 18:33-38) Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no basis for a charge against this man."
     But they insisted, "He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here." On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. When he learned that Jesus was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
     When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform some miracle. He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer. The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate. That day Herod and Pilate became friends - before this they had been enemies.
     Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. Therefore, I will punish him and then release him."
     Now he was obliged to release one man to them at the Feast. With one voice they cried out, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!"(Luke 23:4-18)

Mark's account of this story is the shortest and most precise.  Therefore, as each of us can read these stories for ourselves, perhaps I should take his lead.  Mark shares that Pilate released Barrabas, scourged Jesus and released Him to be crucified.  Because of the large crowd (enjoined by the Passover celebration), a full battalion was committed to Jesus.  They joined in the mocking and jearing with a crown of thorns and a purple robe.  They revelled in this idea of "King of the Jews" as they beat him and spat before leading him out to be crucified.

Bloodied and defeated, Matthew, Mark, and Luke claim that Jesus could not bear his cross and that the Roman battalion made Simon of Cyrene carry the cross for him.  Perhaps, like me you wonder who this was.  My guess is he was there for the Passover celebration from Cyrene Lybia;

  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_of_Cyrene "Cyrene was a Jewish community where 100,000 Judean Jews had settled during the reign of Ptolemy Soter (323-285 BC). They had a synagogue in Jerusalem, where many went for annual feasts"

David, from his viewpoint a thousand years before, described the scene at Golgatha that day through Jesus eyes in Psalm 22:6-21; "But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: 'He trusts in the Lord; let the Lord rescue him.
Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.' Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you
even at my mother's breast. From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother's womb you have been my God.  Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. Roaring lions tearing their prey open their mouths wide against me. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me (I am laid) in the dust of death. Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing. But you, O Lord, be not far off; O my Strength, come quickly to help me. Deliver my life from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs. Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

Mark 15:34; "And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"—which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" We can hear the echo from David in Psalm 22:1.
as those words ring through the ages from the hearts of man.

"Answer me, O Lord, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble. Come near and rescue me; redeem me because of my foes. You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you.
Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst." Psalm 69:16-21.

As Jesus died, great stormclouds had gathered and there was a great earthquake.  The curtain within the temple separating the people from the mercy seat of God was torn in two.  Upon the hill of Golgatha, before the cross of Jesus, the Roman centurian, a Gentile, uttered those words God desires to pass all of our lips; "
"Surely this man was the Son (a son) of God!" Mark 15:39.

According to Jewish law, "If a man guilty of a capital offense is put to death and his body is hung on a tree,  you must not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God's curse. You must not desecrate the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. (Deuteronomy 21:22-23)

This man, Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the council who saw beyond the Kingdom of the Jews toward the Kingdom of God became the good Samaritan of the day and took the body of this man, Jesus, and laid it in his own tomb.  The women who had followed the events of that day held vigil until the very end.

Response to Psalm 54:1-7

Having shared the atoning sacrifice of Passover and the sacrificial offering of Jesus Christ and witnessed the wrath of God against self-righteousness, this Psalm fits right in.  We can hear David's cry for vindication against his enemies! we can imagine Christ's cry against man's rebellion against God which in itself led to his own death!  We can recite these words ourselves as we fight both our physical earthly enemies, and the warring spiritual nature of our ideologies within.

Today, we can claim victory with Christ!  Through his freewill offering, our access back to the Father was complete!  Death holds no victory!  We have been delivered from every trouble and share in devine victory over the evil in our lives.  We need only to claim it and believe it and leave it behind.  He has made it possible to experience Love, Joy, and Peace through perseverance amidst our earthly trials with our eyes focused on that greatest prize.  Dwelling on the negative from here on out will only be by personal choice.

Response to Proverbs 11:5-6

Through Christ, we have overcome.  Through righteousness, we can enjoy our freedom.  However, the fallout of bad choices will continue to plague our lives.  Release your entrapments which hold you back.  Focus on the fruits of the tree of life and leave that other tree beyond ancient memory.

Live a life of true Love and laughter!

Until tomorrow

March 10, 2010, Numbers 14:1-15;16, Mark 14:53-72, Psalm 53:1-6, Proverbs 11:4

Dear Lord, thank you for giving yourself sacrificially that we might be reunited with you.  May your Kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven.  Help us to see more of you as we consider the message you have for us today.  Speak to us and speak through us. May our offerings in thought and word be pleasing in your sight.

Response to Numbers 14:1-15:16

It was just yesterday that I posted the following comment as I blogged about the quail.  "Moses learned a lesson about trusting in the Lord and the people were reminded again against rebelling and complaining before the Lord."  Perhaps Moses learned, but the people start out today rebelling and complaining again!  They don't trust their leader and the relative comfort of slavery is looking pretty good now that they are aware of the challenges that lay ahead!

Joshua joins Caleb and with Moses and Aaron they entreat the people to trust in the Lord who has done such wonderful things in their midst.  I can take their wise counsel to heart in the midst of the trials of my own life;  "Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land (evil in this world), because we will swallow them up (our God reigns!). Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them." But the people had had enough, they had served this God and life had not become easy! They didn't want to deal with this righteous honor thing anymore! Faith was gone, they were weak, they just wanted to go back to the good old days - of course, Egypt had probably adjusted to life without them - and they had grumbled and complained there also - grumbling and complaining had become an habitual addiction.

Moses writes that God was angry too!  Let's wipe these people out and start over!  I can start a new people to carry out my plan!  But Moses reminds Him of all the work that has already been done.  God has already shown the power of his hand in bringing the people this far.  The world is watching and God's reputation is on the line.  When the people refuse to honor their leader, when there is no faith, no joy, no hope, there is no strength, There is no power to save!  There is only confusion and despair!  If people give up on God, God may give up on them and save the good stuff for the future.  For me, I want to see God at work saving the world within my lifetime.  I want to see him bringing his people into the promised land!  I can't wait!

Through inspirational prayer, Moses staves off yet another catostrophe!  His words of Numbers 14:18 echo the words of God in Exodus 34:6-9; "And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation."
     Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. "O Lord, if I have found favor in your eyes," he said, "then let the Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our wickedness and our sin, and take us as your inheritance."

God's response was not as forgiving however following two years of work with these people.  This generation loses its opportunity to enter the promised land.  The pain they suffer, they will suffer for the rest of their lives because they could not honor God with praise and thanksgiving for His gifts to them.  They rebelled and complained and God removed His blessing from them for their lack of Faith!  Their prophecy regarding their end would be fulfilled.  They would die in this wilderness.  Only the two that honored God through faith, Joshua and Caleb, were allowed to live to a ripe old age.  If you want to extend your life - faith, hope, and love are some pretty good vitamins.

However, God is still is seeking that generation that will fill the whole earth with His glory!  The NIV is the only version I have found that verse 21 does not speak of the glory of the Lord filling the earth in the future!  (KJV) "But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord." (see also RSV, NASB, ESV, ASV)  Are you willing to take a risk and honor God through Loving God and Loving your fellow man? Could we be the generation to witness the power of His salvation within our lifetime?; Isaiah 45:23-25 "By myself I have sworn, my mouth has uttered in all integrity a word that will not be revoked: Before me every knee will bow; by me every tongue will swear. They will say of me, 'In the Lord alone are righteousness and strength.' "All who have raged against him will come to him and be put to shame. But in the Lord all the descendants of Israel will be found righteous and will exult.

In Numbers 14:3, the men had said; "Our wives and children will be taken as plunder", they felt they would be captives once again in a foreign land.  However, their children were watching.  They had been brought up observing the wonderful power of God and were raised to understood the Joy and Power that came with honor!  I have often felt that their experience of the Love of God which routinely overshadowed the mundane struggles of life (of which they knew no better) caused them to become the most righteous generation that ever lived.  ("There they are, overwhelmed with dread, for God is present in the company of the righteous" Psalm 14:5) It was this generation, this company of righteous brought up as witnesses to the awe-full power and might of an almighty God who required their honor to find their strength and a faith that would conquer the Giants and and bring them into the promised land.

This was a story in which the children witnessed the lack of faith by their parents and changed the course of the world in their lifetimes as each embraced God with their faith.  They finally understood the ideals of Psalm 73:11-15 as they witnessed God's wrath against their lack of faith. "They say, 'How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?' This is what the wicked are like - always carefree, they increase in wealth (their power exceeds righteousness). Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure; in vain have I washed my hands in innocence. All day long I have been plagued; I have been punished every morning. If I had said, 'I will speak thus,' I would have betrayed your children."  And yet, this generation of parents, who were abandoned by God because of their lack of faith, repented and raised up a kingdom of Nazirites who's joy in the Lord was their strength.  God would do this and it is marvelous in our eyes.  He swore in Numbers 14:33; "As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected."  This scenario is played out over and over in the Bible in speaking of the Kingdom of God, the wedding feast prepared for all man.  Malachi 4:6; "He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse."  Let the tradition of passing on a devoted faith in a Holy Loving Powerful and Peaceful God become the reputation of our generation as our lives point all men unto the Father through whom that Love, Power, and Peace will be extended to nations and peoples on earth.

And yet, that faith and honor still met many challenges in the days to come!  Our reading of Numbers 14:39-45 speaks of their repentance.  Although they intended to honor God now by going up against the enemy, they still would not listen to the leader God had placed within their midst - and they were crushed.  Matthew 12:25; "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand."  Through our reading of this passage, we are experiencing a lesson in honor.  Before going out to battle, the faithful must experience the presence and the will of the Lord within their midst.  They must honor the spokesman God has placed within their midst.  Gideon did not go to battle until he felt an assurance that God was on his side (Judges 6:11-40).  Judas Maccabees reflected this attitude in the face of tremendous odds in II Maccabees 15:21b; "it is not through arms but through the Lord's decision that victory is won by those who deserve it."  Moses again stated the will of God in Numbers 14:42; "Do not go up, because the LORD is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies" - yet still the people did not trust their leader and suffered great defeat.  Honoring God requires us to honor our leaders and trust that God has placed them in authority.  We cannot rely on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). We must be united under God and realistically reflect on whether the fruits of our spirit reflect the fruit of the Spirit of God.

I John 4:1 states; "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."  The passage goes on to confessing Jesus Christ.  I believe this goes beyond confession of the name, but to an acceptance of the ministry and the representation of the man.  To see Jesus Christ apart from the Prince of Peace - apart from the fruits of the Spirit which are Love, Joy, Peace..., is to have separated him from His very essence - the heart of His teaching.  To use our concept of Jesus Christ to judge the world and our fellowman appears to me to be the spirit of an "anti-christ" rather than Jesus Christ as I reflect on the words and the heart of His ministry.  The world is in peril because Jesus Christ has become a stumbling block.  Instead of the way, the truth, and the life, He has been treated like a Rock that detracts from the Love of the Father instead of drawing all men to the Love of the Father.  This must be changed for the world to see the salvation of our God!  Indeed, the faith groups that isolate themselves from the world routinely find themselves isolated from God and their children are leaving by double digit percentages!  Our children are experiencing the Spirit of God that calls them to a love for their fellowman.  Let's not challenge this, but work with the Spirit of God and seek a Spirit of Love, Joy, Peace - and Truth.  With that Spirit, we shall indeed move mountains - and defeat Giants.

As we experience this Kingdom of God - as we enter into the promised land as His Kingdom comes on earth as it is in Heaven, don't forget, child of God, to repent; to honor God in thanksgiving for the power of His salvation in our lives; to dedicate our lives to the administration of His Love to all people to the glory of His name; and to come together for fellowship; to celebrate the joy and peace we share with one another through the Spirit of God. Does this not reflect the message of Numbers 15:1-16?

Romans 11:33-12:2; "Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! 'Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?' (Isaiah 40:13) 'Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?' (Job 41:11) For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.
     Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual (reasonable) act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will."

Response to Mark 14:53-72

As Jesus was brought before the rulers of the Jewish faith, they attempted to bring charges against him.  Due to His prophecy regarding the destruction, they attempted to claim that He had said he would destroy the temple - yet build it again in three days.  As they did not understand the prophecy and even their words were confusing, this charge could not stand.  This accusation stemmed from the conversation overheard earlier as Jesus spoke of the destruction of the temple in Mark 13:1, yet the dialogue is better represented in John's memory and inspirational thoughts regarding the event as shared in John 2:18-22;

"Then the Jews demanded of him, 'What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?' Jesus answered them, 'Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.' The Jews replied, 'It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?' But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken."

Not only was Jesus concerned for His own welfare, he also had wep't for Jerusalem.  David had reflected his attitude even for those who stood to condemn him to death in Psalm 69:6-8; "May those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me, O Lord, the Lord Almighty; may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me, O God of Israel. For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face. I am a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my own mother's sons;  for zeal for your house consumes me"

One day, even these shall behold the sacrificial lamb represented by the one who that day stood accursed; Matthew 23:37-39; "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord."  That prophecy is being fulfilled within our lifetimes.

And yet, that day in the temple courts was not that day.  That day, they would find justification to put the Messiah to death.  Jesus, Son of God and Son of man, had become a Jew through the birth canal of the virgin Mary.  His Father, the Spirit of God Himself, was certainly not of Jewish descent. (Luke 1:34-35).  His situation today was not unlike the boy who stood convicted by the Jewish community in Leviticus 24:10-16, 23. This passage representes the law of Jewish heritage and also became the law which condemned Jesus to death in today's reading;

"Now the son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father went out among the Israelites, and a fight broke out in the camp between him and an Israelite. The son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name with a curse; so they brought him to Moses. (His mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri the Danite.)  They put him in custody until the will of the Lord should be made clear to them. Then the Lord said to Moses: "Take the blasphemer outside the camp. All those who heard him are to lay their hands on his head, and the entire assembly is to stone him.  Say to the Israelites: 'If anyone curses his God, he will be held responsible; anyone who blasphemes the name of the Lord must be put to death. The entire assembly must stone him. Whether an alien or native-born, when he blasphemes the Name, he must be put to death.
     (vs.23) Then Moses spoke to the Israelites, and they took the blasphemer outside the camp and stoned him. The Israelites did as the Lord commanded Moses.

Jesus remained quiet that day.  His father had given him but one line to say within his defense and it would be the statement which would lead him to be crucified at the hands of the Romans as the people of Israel were not allowed to stone him according to their customs.  He uttered what was heard that day by that counsel as blasphemy as they did not understand the will of God at work within their very midst.  "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" He answered; "I AM"

Mark 14:64b-65a; "They all condemned him as worthy of death. Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, 'Prophesy!'" compare this day also with Numbers 12:1-8, and 14 as the High priests of the camp stand in judgement on Moses as He has invited a representative of the world to become a member of the family of God;

"Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite.  'Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?' they asked. 'Hasn't he also spoken through us?' And the Lord heard this. (Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)
At once the Lord said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, 'Come out to the Tent of Meeting, all three of you.' So the three of them came out. Then the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud; he stood at the entrance to the Tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When both of them stepped forward, he said, 'Listen to my words: 'When a prophet of the Lord is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams. But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house. With him I speak face to face,
clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?'
     (vs. 14) The Lord replied to Moses, "If her father had spit in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp for seven days; after that she can be brought back."

Today's reading reflects Peter's denial as prophecied at dinner.  Upon the third denial of Jesus, the rooster crows a second time and Peter broke down and wept.  How could he know that his very act of denial would bring praise to the prophetic powers of His master for the generations to come?  How could any of them know that their acts of that day - from Judas, to the Jewish community, to the early church Father's in their humanity - were all part of the Master's plan.  Their weakness was indeed the strength of the Master revealed!  Peter's 3 denials created a deep wound that would focus his faith for the rest of his life.  Paul would later write of his own "thorn of the flesh" in II Corinthians 12:8-9a;

"Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me."

If you have time, Read Isaiah chapter 53.  It was almost as if Isaiah were reflecting on an event that had already happened, but we know that the early manuscripts of Isaiah were around hundreds of years before these events ever took place.  This was indeed the hand of God at work.  Isaiah 53:1; "Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?" I thiink the answer is 'You and me, brother!" The new question is "What are we going to do about it?"

Response to Psalm 53:1-6

What a powerful Psalm following our reflections on Numbers 14-15 and Mark 14 today!  Truly, after a serious accounting of the word of God and seeing His glory around us day and night, how could anyone say in their heart that there is no God?  Yet, how can anyone who reads this, understanding the heart of God as fulfilled through Jesus Christ who served and died for all man, believe that God does not love all man as reflected in John 3:16-17?  Truly, we are all fools.  Truly, we must all continue to seek the wisdom of God.  We all alike are fallen! Even Jesus said in Mark 10:8; "Why do you call me good? No one is good -except God alone"

If we do not serve one another, our brothers and sisters here on earth, and seek His Love for all created things in our words and actions, we will indeed follow in the way of all who have gone before us.  We will face terror and heartache without hope; without Love; without Joy.  Our bones will be scattered among the ungodly.

Yet, our deliverance has come! He was born in the little town of Bethlehem.  He came unto His own, but His own received Him not.  Yet He promises that they too shall see Him and accept Him as their own on that day when every knee shall bow and every tongue confess our Lord Jesus to the glory of God the Father.  It is that day which we celebrate through faith worldwide.  The Day of the Lord.  Open your eyes today and fear not.  There is but one to revere, - for He alone is good.  Numbers 11:23; "Is the Lord's arm too short? You will now see whether or not what I (He) says will come true for you."

Response to Proverbs 11:4

What can wealth or worldly possessions do to keep you from death?  What can death do to separate you from the Love of God?  Don't take a ridiculous chance! Confess your sins to him today.  Accept His righteousness as yours will never be enough! Praise and Thank Him for His forgiveness of your sins through His sacrificial atonement through Jesus Christ offered on your behalf, Fellowship with His children here on earth through His Spirit of Love, Joy, and Peace until that glorious day when you are called home to His physical presence.

But until then, I look forward to spending time with you!

Until tomorrow
